WANT TO KNOW MORE about Rock Solid?...

Rock Solid, a Youth Club for 11- 14 year olds, has now been running for a few year sand plays a vital role in the youth work of our church. Up to 30 young people enjoy a packed programme of fun, games and Christian teaching on a Friday night, 7-9pm.
For the majority of these youngsters, this is the only experience of church they get and it plays a vital role in their young lives.

Where does ‘Rock Solid’ come from?

Rock Solid is a partnership between a local church and ‘Youth for Christ’.Established in 1946 when Billy Graham came to this country, ‘Youth for Christ’ has a passion to see young people reaching out to their peers with the gospel. YFC supplies us with everything we need for a successful programme of weekly outreach clubs.
Rock Solid is specifically geared towards the 11-14 age group, with its particular tastes, interests and needs in mind. It's great fun, relevant to the young people's lives and reveals Jesus to them -showing that He cares and understands them.

What do we actually DO?

YFC supply all the material and we choose which parts to follow, swap around and sometimes miss out as we often run out of time for all the activities!
The evening is mostly made up of group games often played in teams. These are very interactive, fast-paced and sometimes messy! Needless to say the kids love them!
It’s not just about fun, however, as each game is meant to draw out a specific point or theme for the evening, which is based unsound biblical and moral teaching.
There is an opener to start with and up to 4 games, broken up by announcements, a ‘Chatroom’ session where ideas are developed, an ‘info point’ and‘Thought’ where the main theme or point is discussed.
Half way through the evening we have very popular ‘TuckShop’ selling sweets, which gives the kids (and adults!) a breather and time to hang out together.
All in all, they have a great time and let off some steam after a long week of school, see their friends and hear about God in the process… and it works as they keep coming back for more!

What do the kids think about it?

Rock Solid

From questionnaire:
“It’s fun and a great place to talk to friends and catch up.”
“It’s a good way to tell young people about the Christian religion.”
“It’s fun and educational and a chance to meet my mates”
“It’s really fun and something to do on a Friday night! And I love the stuff we do!”
“It’s really, really fun and hyperactive!”

Quotes:
“(The 24 hour famine) A fun way to …raise money for charity. “-Amelia
“Fun for Fridays instead of getting bored at home!”- Sophie
“One Big Weekend (their weekend away) was great!”-Dan
“Tuck Shop is good - I like the strawberry bootlaces. I like the games in the paddock - they’re fun!” - Rob
“Fun, fun, fun!!!” - Steph

What do the adults think about it?
Quotes:
“Rock Solid has a good message for young people.”
“They are all very friendly to each other.”
“As an adult I have really got to know young people.”

“Although they lark around, during the ‘talkybit’ I feel they really do understand what it’sabout.”

What does it involve for the volunteer leaders?
How often do they have to attend?

The volunteers are organized on a rota, which means they attend one or two Rock Solid sessions a month. The frequency of helping is up to you and if something comes up it can often be swapped.

Do they have to lead activities?

It’s not a requirement! The level of involvement is up totem - some lead activities, including joining in! Some just lead the discussion sessions, or join in a discussion group. Others prefer to watch the games and help by being another responsible adult and lend hand setting up and clearing away.

However you can help, you are most welcome!

Do they have to put in any other hours?

Not usually! The Youth Worker/s assemble the resources and work out the programme for each week, so no extra hours are required on a weekly basis - volunteers just have to turn up and help! If you are willing to lead, any games you might be doing are given to you in advance to give you a chance to read through and prepare.

There are the odd away weekends and special events, but they are again organized by the Youth Worker/s and supported by any available volunteers.

Can I Volunteer?

YES PLEASE!… We are really excited about how well Rock Solid works and we really need new volunteers to start in September when we hope to expand the Rock Solid work to two sessions on a Friday. Anyone over the age of 16 is welcome. The only requirement is that anyone over 18 has to be CRB checked for Child Protection, which we sort out for you.
Please get in touch and see how you can help!

Visits welcome!

FORT ROCKY 2007

In the middle of July, 10 lads (including me and Samuel) and one brave lady, Becky, went to the midlands for Fort Rocky 2007. Although it was a smaller number of young people who were able to come this year, they made up for it in noise and energy! It was a real pleasure to take them on this trip as they were very respectful, enthusiastic and got on well with each other and the rest of the 250 other young people there. What was really encouraging was seeing those who may not have been the best of friends gelling on well and encouraging each other...

...so lots of good experiences were had (including a few difficult ones) and I am really thankful to God for his hand on the trip, to the young people for making it so much fun and to their parents for bringing them up to be so delightful. Roll on Fort Rocky 2008 and before that, Soul Survivor this summer. Please pray that the young people will enjoy it and experience the good things God has for them.
