The plan shows the current proposed layout of the 'Prayer Garden' that will hopefully be taking shape in the Orchard in the coming months...

March Update
Please do pay a visit to the Prayer Garden beside the Refectory – the primroses are out now, and look beautiful. Quite a lot has been going on quietly over winter, and much more activity is planned now Spring has come.
Over autumn and winter the bare patches have been reseeded and have filled in well; the edges have been cleared, the existing flower beds maintained, the moss raked out and ground fertilised. We’re indebted to Joe Dolphin, who has been responsible for much of this work, and to Peter Edwards.
Plant-wise - Two climbers have been planted on the back wall; bulbs were planted on the ‘Bank of Thanks’ last autumn and are now coming up; the Sunday School have planted up several pots with flowers and summer bulbs. The pruning of the apple trees is underway.
Soon to happen...
Fencing – a new wooden panel fence along boundary with neighbour Don Cox. Don is doing this work for us during April.
Hedging – once the fence is in, native hedge varieties will be planted alongside it – to provide a ‘living’ fence and to encourage birds and other wildlife. Isy North and a friend of Colin King are helping with this.
A New Rose bed – is planned for the back wall, alongside an area of wood chips which will take the seat donated by Pam Hancock. Anyone able to help with this work, please contact Cherida.
New Plants – More roses will be planted on the paddock side of the wall to the left of the archway entrance; an olive tree is to be planted near the cross on the back wall; more climbers will be added.
Drain repair – there may need to be some disruption to the Prayer Garden to excavate and repair a collapsed drain coming from the refectory. We will try to keep damage to a minimum.
A Prayer and Meeting Room – there are exciting plans to build Prayer and Meeting Room in the Prayer Garden, (oak-framed, glass-sided with tiled roof) with an entrance from the Refectory via a glass antrum. This would be used for church services and meetings, counselling sessions as part of Vine Counselling Services, and as a general church/Refectory facility. The Diocese is very supportive and will transfer the title for that section of the orchard to the PCC. A group has been set up to take this project forward – Matt Thomson, Graham Preston, Mike Greaves, David Anderson, Claude Elliott and Cherida Stobart. At present, plans for the building are being drawn up, prior to discussions with the planners and English Heritage, ahead of applying for planning permission. To build this properly would be expensive, and we will need to fund-raise, but we already have a significant sum pledged.
This shows the corner next to the Refectory where it is hoped we may be able to have the Meeting Room.
Courtyard and water feature – as part of the above plan, the idea is to have a paved courtyard between the Prayer and Meeting Room and the south wall. A water feature would be placed on the other side of the meeting room, on the wall adjoining the vicarage garden.
Pond Area – the plan for a pond will depend on how other aspects of the garden pan out. Health & Safety considerations are important and may influence matters.
Outdoor Altar - we are trying to source a stone altar that could be placed in the Prayer Garden for use in outdoor services.
For more details on any of the above, or if you would like to help, please contact Cherida Stobart 01934 832188.
